BUCHAREST - Environment:
LOCATION
Bucharest lies in the South-South-East of Romania, along the banks of Dâmboviţa and
Colentina, 60 km away from the Danube, the country's natural southern border, 120 km away from the
Carpathians and 226 km from the Black Sea.
RELIEF
The plain on which Bucharest was built is slightly wavy and formed by large river meadows:
Sabar-Dâmboviţa, Dâmboviţa - Colentina, Colentina - Pasărea; their aspect is flat,
but slightly higher than other regions within the city, thus they are called hills (Cotroceni, Băneasa,
Filaret, Văcăreşti).
The Valley of Dâmboviţa, which crosses Bucharest on a total lenght of 22 km, cuts
right through the heart of the city, from Northwest to Southeast. It has a large meadow with a taller right
bank. Along it are the hills of Cotroceni, Filaret, Belu and Văcăreşti, identical names for
a series of neighborhoods.
CLIMATE
The climate is temperate-continental, with very cold winters and hot summers. The annual average
temperature measures 10degrees C and there are four annual seasons that ensure a gentle climatic trasition.

BUCHAREST - BRIEF HISTORY:
As an old royal residence, Bucharest holds an impressive number of 270 churches,
of which 74 are declared historic monuments; the very firsts ones were built during the 15th and 16th
centuries (St. Dumitru, Bărăţia, Precupeţii Vechi, Popa Tatu, Scaune etc); art
monuments, busts or statues, kings' and lords' palaces, parks and public gardens. All of these once
suggested the resemblence to the old Paris, 19th century locals often calling it Little Paris.
After a centuries long status as King's residence, Bucharest became the capital of Romania
in the second half of the 19th century, by decision of the first leader of Modern Romania, the Unionist
Alexandru Ioan Cuza. This caused important economic and social mutations and most importantly, it brought
Bucharest's tourist potential in the spotlight.

BUCHAREST - INFRASTRUCTURE:
Bucharest is surrounded by a modern road network meant to alleviate the urban traffic, called
"Şoseaua de Centură"(The Belt Road).
The streets inside the city expand as a radius; the most important ones form a large
crossroad in Unirea Square. There are two very long thoroughfares on a N-S and E to W direction, which
spread into many bouleuvards and secondary streets etc.
The transportation inside Bucharest is provided through an extended network of public
transportation such as: trams, buses, trolleybuses and the tube (the most efficent way of getting around
the city, covering a total length of 60 km)or private transportation: taxis and minivans.
Bucharest is a big railway knot with 6 railway stations: The North Station, East or Obor,
Băneasa, Basarab, Filaret and Progresul. There are 9 railways that start from The North Station or
Central Station, connecting Bucharest to all major cities in the country, but also to all major European
cities.
If you would rather enjoy an independent journey throughout the country, you can choose from
the 8 national roads and any of the European roads: E 15 that connects Budapest to Constanţa, E 20
Varşovia to Ruse, E 94 Belgrade to Constanţa.
